Welcome to Shift Research Lab


We are excited to announce that the Data Initiative is now Shift Research Lab! A program of The Piton Foundation, Shift educates and empowers social change organizations by providing reliable, objective data and analysis to inform their decision-making process with sound insight. Founded in 1991 by The Piton Foundation, the program was designed to work in service of social change organizations that are committed to improving the lives of Colorado’s low-income children, families and communities.

Why the name change and new look? After much reflection, we realized that the Data Initiative, which has been a flagship program of The Piton Foundation for more than 20 years, is more than just an “initiative.” It was time to create a name--and identity--that more clearly communicates who the Data Initiative is and what it does. The new name, Shift Research Lab, and tagline, Data Driving Social Change, work together to illustrate its mission, which is to pioneer a data-driven culture that puts neighborhood-level information into the hands of people who can create change for low-income communities.
 
Looking ahead to the next 20 years, we realize that, as with all of Gary Community Investments’ assets, the Data Initiative is expected to become fully-invested within the Colorado community. To ensure that its work continues after Gary Community Investments ceases to exist, Shift is exploring the possibility of becoming a stand-alone organization. Establishing a new brand for the Data Initiative is part of this process.
 
Moving forward, Shift remains one of Piton’s flagship programs, but it will more intentionally focus on expanding its reach and impact throughout metro Denver and Colorado. Shift will continue to educate and empower social change organizations by providing reliable, objective data and analysis to inform their decision-making process with sound insight, and it will advocate for the democratization of data so that communities are able to tackle the most pervasive social issues with confidence, clarity and empathy.
