A letter from GCI President & CEO Dave Younggren
After spending more than four decades working alongside my mentor and business partner Sam Gary, it is with great gratitude that I’m announcing my retirement from my current position as President and CEO of Gary Community Investments (GCI), which includes Gary Community Investment Company and The Piton Foundation.
While the majority of my career was dedicated to the oil business, I’ve had the privilege of spending the past seven years helping Sam realize his longtime vision of combining private sector and philanthropic resources to help improve the Colorado community. I’m proud of the enduring mission that the Gary family and our board has solidified for GCI, which includes our two-generation approach to supporting young children, prenatal to 5, and our commitment to invest all of our financial assets into the community by 2035.
Since launching GCI in 2014, our staff and board have been experimenting with how to harness the power of philanthropy and social impact investing to create transformative change for Colorado’s low-income children and their families. We’ve learned from our success and failures, and this good work will continue as we transition to new leadership.
Our board is committed to protecting and stewarding the vision that Sam outlined for us, and I look forward to remaining engaged as Chair of the Board of Gary Community Investment Company and The Piton Foundation. In addition, I plan to continue serving on the boards of historic partner organizations like the Urban Land Conservancy, Elevation Community Land Trust, Colorado Forum, Colorado Children’s Health Access Program and Building a Better Colorado.
To support GCI’s leadership transition, I will continue in my current role until our Board has selected my successor. Our board has formed a search committee and engaged executive search firm, Korn Ferry, to lead the process of identifying a new President and CEO. Korn Ferry will work closely with our search committee, comprised of our board and staff members, over the next few months to conduct a nationwide executive search. Learn more about the job and how to apply through our Career Opportunities page.
Although my decision to retire is bittersweet, I am looking forward to this new chapter in my life, which will be dedicated to my family and continuing to serve the community. Thank you to Sam, our board and staff, and our investees and partners for the opportunity to lead GCI and work alongside all of you.
